Speculative Designs

Peter Grimes

Venue: Sadlers Wells         Written by: Benjamin Britten         Directors: Omar Shahryar and Simon Donger
Transposing the original themes of isolation and exclusion from a fishing village in the 19 century to contemporary city living, I explored how society treats its vulnerable, in particular rough sleepers.  As with Peter, most people shun rough sleepers, walking ‘over’ them.  Similarly, Peter is excluded, vilified and finally driven to end his life.

Design notes:  Peter is placed in a concrete world, with water slowly rising.  Reflecting his pre-rough sleeping past, the world is made of books.  The rest of the world pass by over head.  Like the cast, the audience look down on Peter.

Clocks 1888: The Greener

Venue: Hackney Empire         Created by: Brolly         Directors: Dominic Hingorani and Rachana Jadhav
Greener works in the clock, under Caster, her 'bully' boss. Author and Ma try to protect her. The faster the clock goes the harder the 'sweaters' work.

Design notes:  I represented the hierarchy of class/power by tipping the clock tower on its front so the audience are looking down on the workers below. The clock mechanism dominates, with automata showing the relationship between the clock and work.

The Apology

Venue: The Maria Studio, Young Vic         Written by: Kyo Choi         Director:  Ria Parry
A story about the investigation into the Comfort Camps set up by the Japanese during WWII

Design notes:  This play required the playing of videos so I made screens a feature of the design.  They performed a dual function of supporting the video sequences and forming the scenes' 'walls'. The show starts with the screens down, forming walls of a camp tent.

The White Plague

Venue: Imagined         Written by: Karel Capek         Co Designer: Isabella Laslett     Prague Quadrennial project
The White Plague is spreading around the world. Galen has the cure but requires the world's leaders to give up war.

Design notes:  The playing space is behind a two-way mirror forcing the audience to  confront themselves and their role in the downfall of civilisation.  The surrounding walls are live video feed of member of the audience that slowly go out as the plague spreads.  On stage the playing space is adapted for scenes using rising plinths that reference a war memorial.

The Wonderful World of Dissocia

Venue: The Almeida         Written by: Anthony Neilson         Director: Atri Banerjee
Lisa goes to Dissocia in search of her missing hour.  She has an adventure with strangers.  In act two we realise it is all in her mind.

Design notes:  I wanted to contrast the wild and colourful world of mania in Act 1 with the bleak realism in Act 2.  Act 1 is a collage of slow moving video, projection and star shaped light boxes.  Act 2 is muted and near monochrome.

Wooden Maria

Venue: A Summer Festival         Written by: Anon         Costume Designer: Thananya Kaewsanthia
Design notes:  The brief was to design a production for a summer festival.  We designed a dome where the environment inside is created by projection across the dome ceiling.  The audience walk into a 'camp fire inside a forest glade'.  As the show starts the narrater emerges from the fire to tell the tale of Wooden Maria.  The finale is a ball room scene where Maria wears a glorious dress.
